Solar Permits

Solar permit plan is a required step for all Grid-Tied systems. If you are a homeowner looking to install on your own or an installer doing it on behalf of owners; It’s always a good idea to assess what you’ll need up front so you can quickly move through the necessary steps in permitting.

Solar Permit Plan

UL CERTIFICATION

The solar permit office will ensure that the equipment you bought or planning to buy is UL certified — implying it’s okay to connect it to your power company.

Refer to the product spec sheet for UL certification. It looks something like this:“ULC ORD C1703, UL 1703, IEC 61215, IEC 61730, IEC 61701”

“AUTHORITY HAVING JURISDICTION” (OR AHJ):

At Solmoly we will call your local permitting and speak to your “Authority Having Jurisdiction” (or AHJ) – this will either be the City Building Department or County Building Department depending on the Site of the Solar installation. This would be a good time to ask about their engineering requirements as well — some AHJs require a professional engineer’s (PE) stamp to guarantee that your roof can carry the computed weight of a solar array.

SOLAR PERMIT PLAN CHECKLIST:

  • Location of utility meter, electrical panel(s), proposed PV array
  • Structural details – Rafter Size, O.C and roof type
  • Electrical panel(s) and Circuit breaker rating
  • PV array roof report
  • The number of solar panels and inverters, including manufacturer/models spec sheets
  • Capacity rating for your planned power inverter and PV panels

Solar site surveyor’s primary skill is to be able to gather the information for completing the Solar permit program. Getting on the roof is a risky business – please adhere to all the required safety measures.
